The Worst Earworms

I've started a second blog, called The Worst Earworms and it's at worstearworms.tumblr.com.

For any of you who know me, I'm a pop music geek. I oftentimes find myself with the absolutely most random crap in my head... and I do mean crap. It could be a theme song to an 80s sitcom like that Nell Carter gem, "Gimme a Break!" or Madonna's oddest choice for a single ever—"Hanky Panky" from Dick Tracy (it actually somehow went Top 10!).

So I thought I'd share my misery—and my somewhat encyclopedic knowledge of disco and terrible 90s alt rock. Hope you visit sometime!

Remembering Steve Jobs, one year later

Visit Apple.com today, and you'll be treated to a poignant montage of Steve Jobs' visionary successes. To mark the one-year anniversary of the Apple co-founder's death, Apple has honored him with a video of Jobs posing with his products, from the original Mac, to the iPod, to the iPhone.

It is accompanied by snippets of Jobs' keynotes, starting with a Wayne Gretzky quote that he loved: "I skate to where the puck is going to be. Not where it has been. And we've always tried to do that at Apple."

The video is set to Yo-Yo Ma's rendition of the prelude from Bach's Cello Suite No. 1.

All I have to say is, "Thanks, Steve."

Farewell, Peet

Last night was Peet's going-away party. He has to head back home to the Netherlands. The silver lining is that we now have another reason to visit Amsterdam. My buddy, Mark B. (who works at Lufthansa), and I plan to visit him in May, with a side trip to Paris, so je peux pratiquer mon français !

The name change to Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center was official last month.

Best Actress Emmy, Comedy Series

My favorite moment of last night's Emmys telecast was hands-down the award for Best Actress (Comedy). Starting with Amy Poehler's unexpected sprint to the stage, the bit just got funnier and funnier, ending with Tina Fey trying to make out with Jack McBrayer ("Kenneth the Page"), Laura Linney wiping lipstick off her teeth, and Melissa McCarthy saying this was "the best pageant ever."

It's not just you. Both Twitter and Facebook down.

This is so annoying. How can I effectively waste my time all morning, if both Twitter and Facebook are down?

PC Magazine writes:

The popular microblogging site, Twitter, went down early Thursday morning, with the site's operators confirming the outage on a status blog.

Twitter offered no explanation for the outage, adding a characteristically pithy post on its Status blog titled, simply, "Site is Down." "We are determining the cause and will provide an update shortly," the post read.

PCMag.com staffers also noted problems with Facebook at about the same time, with the site failing to load briefly. The status site, downforeveryoneorjustme.com, also reported both Twitter and Facebook being down at about 9:45 AM Eastern time. Facebook was accessible shortly thereafter, although PCMag.com staffers reported a few glitches, such as problems with posting status updates and internal links.

At press time, it was not clear why either site had suffered problems. However, sites operated by Gawker Media crashed on Monday, later believed to be the result of a DDoS attack against The Consumerist blog, which is owned by Consumers Union, but whose content is hosted by Gawker Media.
